Volunteer

Each year 6,500 volunteers contribute to the success of Smith Family programs across the country. Roles include administrative assistance, mentoring, supervising learning clubs and more traditional activities such as sorting, packing and distributing toys, books and hampers at Christmas.

The backbone of The Smith Family

Volunteers are key to enabling us to achieve our vision of a more caring and cohesive society. They are the backbone of our organisation. Without them, much of the work we do would not be possible. Each year 6,500 volunteers contribute more than $5 million worth of time to The Smith Family. We are also supported by the 21,000 women of VIEW Clubs of Australia that was set up by The Smith Family as a way of supporting us to carry out important work in communities where members live.

Types of volunteering

The Smith Family offers a range of volunteering opportunities from innovative on-line mentoring to traditional activities such as sorting toys and books and packing hampers at Christmas time. Our volunteers come from a broad cross-section of the community and perform a variety of roles including mentoring, supervising learning clubs and covering books for our student2student program. We also welcome volunteers from varied professional backgrounds to perform specialised skilled roles within our organisation.

What can you get out of it?

Volunteers add diversity and first-hand community knowledge to the skill set of The Smith Family and in return they have the opportunity to invest in and contribute to the community in which they live. All volunteers are extensively trained to give them an understanding of the vision, mission, purpose and values of The Smith Family, and to give them the skills necessary to carry out what are often very challenging and demanding roles.
