Volunteer with The Smith Family
Volunteers are key to enabling us to achieve our vision of a more caring and cohesive society. They are the backbone of our organisation. Without volunteers, much of the work we do would not be possible.
We need support from community volunteers from around the country to carry out our work. Each year 6,500 volunteers contribute to the success of Smith Family programs across the country. Roles include:
- administrative assistance
- mentoring and tutoring
- supervising learning clubs
- special projects
- sorting and packing Christmas Hampers and many more.
Who volunteers with The Smith Family?
People volunteer for a variety of reasons and come from all walks of life. Volunteers contribute their time and talent for a number of reasons. Some of the reasons people volunteer with The Smith Family include:
- want to support the community in which they live
- to gain work experience
- retirees with additional time to give
- stay at home parents
- newly arrived immigrants looking to settle into their newly adopted country
- highly skilled professionals wanting to contribute to short term projects

Why volunteer with The Smith Family?
Volunteers add diversity and first-hand knowledge to the skill set of The Smith Family and in return they have the opportunity to invest in and contribute to the areas in which they live. All volunteers are extensively trained to give them an understanding of the vision, mission, purpose and values of The Smith Family, and to give them the skills necessary to carry out what are often very challenging and demanding roles.

What you should think about before choosing a volunteer role
To ensure that you have an enjoyable and rewarding volunteering experience with The Smith Family we suggest you consider the following when you make the decision to commit your time and talent.
- Your interests - It is important that the choice of your volunteer role is driven by your interests. A role which is compatible with your interests is bound to lead to a more rewarding experience.
- Your availability - Volunteer roles at The Smith Family differ in terms of the commitment required. Some roles may require you to be committed for a longer period of time compared to others. It is important that you choose a role which would fit in with your schedule and for a period of time you can commit
- Ability to travel - Consider how far you can travel to volunteer and the mode of transport. Choose a role which is available within the radius you wish to travel to.
