Illawarra Coal is a member of the BHP Billiton Group, one of the world's most diverse mineral resources companies.

Illawarra Coal is part of BHP Billiton's Metallurgical Coal Customer Sector Group. Based in Wollongong, 75 kilometres south of Sydney, and operating in the Illawarra and Wollondilly regions of NSW. Operating three high-volume underground long wall mines - Appin, West Cliff and Dendrobium, as well as two coal preparation plants located at West Cliff and Port Kembla.

They are a major employer in the Illawarra and Wollondilly regions of NSW,accounting for 3% of direct employment (close to 1400 direct employees), with the largest flow-on effect of any regional industry (a multiplier of three jobs for every Illawarra Coal job) according to the IRIS Illawarra Coal Economic Impact Statement 2011.

Illawarra Coal proudly supports the Smith Family, and through its two community programs - the Illawarra Coal Community Partnerships Program and the Dendrobium Community Enhancement Program  fund a range of other valuable community projects and programs. The company has committed close to half a million dollars to 2015to help The Smith Family establish a new Learning for Life office in the southern suburbs of Wollongong in NSW which will offer support for disadvantaged children to fully participate in their education giving them access to a range of valuable community programs.
