What We Do - Help Kids with The Smith Family

How we unlock opportunities for disadvantaged Australian children through education and learning

The Smith Family is an evidence based organisation and seeks to understand how we can unlock opportunities for disadvantaged Australians. Research enables us to work with communities effectively to build their capacity to improve outcomes for children and young people and their families.

About our Learning for Life suite of education and learning programs.

Almost 30,000 disadvantaged children are accessing our comprehensive Learning for Life programs, which span a disadvantaged child's early years through the vulnerable transition points in their development, such as moving from home to primary school and from school to further study or workforce entry.  At every step along the way, our nationwide network of Learning for Life workers support our children, linking them with opportunities including literacy support, mentoring, life skills and personal development initiatives, in addition to financial scholarships to assist with essential school expenses such as uniforms, books and excursions.

Emotional literacy support

We provide a network support through tutoring, coaching and mentoring and participation in extra curricular activities targeted at key transition stages in a student's education to support their ability to develop and manage relationships with different people for different purposes. These programs complement formal learning and help students to develop the skills they need to participate fully in society
