Discussing beyond school options with your child

Talking about life after school can feel like a big step for you and your child.

It's also a chance to explore their interests, strengths, and future goals together. You don’t have to have all the answers. Being open, curious, and supportive is what really helps. And it’s normal not to know where to start.

Here are some simple questions to help you start the conversation.

Tips

  1. Start early and be open: Begin these conversations early so they don’t feel rushed. Be open to all paths — university, TAFE, apprenticeships, work, or a gap year.
  2. Listen actively: Encourage your child to share their interests and concerns. Listen without judgment. Talk about the different jobs people you know do, and what they involve.
  3. Explore together: Look at different options with them. This could include universities, TAFEs, apprenticeships, or other training opportunities. Attend open days or career expos if you can.
  4. Discuss goals and values: Talk about what matters most to them in a future job. This can help narrow down what paths might suit them.
  5. Encourage flexibility: Remind them it’s okay to change direction. Many people try different jobs or study something new later in life
Remember, you don’t need all the answers, and neither does your child. You can explore options and learn together.
