Mobile Data Basics

Mobile data lets your phone or tablet connect to the internet without Wi-Fi.

This means you can browse the web, use apps, and watch videos wherever you get a mobile signal.

To learn more about what mobile data is, you can complete this 5-minute self-paced tutorial from Be Connected: What is data?

How does mobile data work?

To use mobile data, your device needs a SIM card. Your plan includes a set amount of data each month. If you use all your data, your internet might slow down, or you might get extra charges.

Mobile data is sent through the same towers that handle phone calls. In cities, you usually get a good signal, but in some rural areas, the signal might be weak.

What is the difference between Wi-Fi and mobile data?

  • Wi-Fi uses a router that connects to the internet and can link multiple devices at once.
  • Mobile data uses your phone's connection to the mobile network. Modern phones also allow you to share data with other devices by creating a hotspot.

To understand these differences better, you can complete these activities from the Be Connected website:

What are 4G and 5G?

4G and 5G are types of mobile data connections. The "G" stands for "generation." Each new generation is faster and better than the one before. Right now, 5G is the fastest option available.

Why is my mobile data not working?

If your mobile data isn't working, try these steps:

  1. Check your data usage: You might have used all your data for the month.
  2. Move to a better location: If the signal is weak, try moving to a different spot.
  3. Turn off airplane mode: Make sure airplane mode is turned off.
  4. Check your settings: Ensure mobile data is turned on in your phone's settings. For specific instructions:
