Celebrating International Womens Day with our Patron

06 March 2026

Personal reflections from Lorraine Thomson (VIEW National President) and Angie Carroll (National Vice President) on their visit to Admiralty House for International Women’s Day 2026. Representing VIEW, Lorraine, Angie and Maryanne Maher (VIEW National Manager) joined 30 other patron organisations of the Governor-General of Australia, Her Excellency, Sam Mostyn AC at the special celebration.

Reflections from Lorraine

The setting was spectacular. We basked in the sunshine and dispersed cloud at the historic Admiralty House, perched on the headland directly opposite the Sydney Opera House.

For me, highlights of the day included listening to Aunty Norma Ingram, an Indigenous Elder who spoke of her Dream Time Culture, and listening to our wonderful Patron, Her Excellency Sam Mostyn AC delivering her key address.

This focused on empowering women and girls and calling out the need for better gender representation. Her Excellency suggested we consider nominating and recognising women who make a significant impact, whether at a local or a national level to reflect the community’s diversity.

This event was such an honour at attend. I was filled with pride to be representing VIEW.

Angie, Maryanne and I enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea strolling around the beautifully manicured grounds, joined by many powerful women’s organisations who work to support and empower women including: Breast Cancer Network Australia; Sisters of Charity Foundation; Suicide Support Foundation; Youth Insearch Foundation; MS Australia, The Gidget Foundation and many more.

One message shared by her Excellency has stayed with me and reminds me of what it means to be a VIEW member: “We lift one another with care, kindness and respect that encourages, inspires and always involves others.”

Reflections from Angie

What an exciting afternoon Maryanne, Lorraine and I had when we were invited in the name of VIEW to an International Women’s Day function hosted by Her Excellency, Sam Mostyn AC at her home, Admiralty House in Kirribilli!

The large manor occupies the tip of Kirribilli Point and is set in beautiful gardens with commanding views across Sydney Harbour to the Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House. Admiralty House is regarded as the secondary residence of the Governor-General and was originally built as a private residence in 1843. The inside was as spectacular as the breathtaking outside views.

Around 100 ladies (and three gents!) from a range of women’s organisations of which the Governor-General is the Patron were welcomed personally by Her Excellency at the door. What an honour for us!

The formal part of the event began with an Acknowledgement of Country by Aunty Norma Ingram, a delightful woman, who works tirelessly for her people. Her Excellency then talked about the common thread linking the people gathered - caring and wanting to make life better for those we serve and advocate for.

Helen Daly Fisher OAM from the National Foundation for Australian Women followed this, encouraging guests to connect to help boost all the great work being done. After copious photos were taken, we enjoyed a fabulous afternoon tea in the gardens.

All the ladies were willing and happy to share the story of their work and of course, we were very willing to mingle and chat about our passion (VIEW!). Some women knew of VIEW but not actually who we were and what we did, and we were incredibly happy to spread the word. It was wonderful for me personally, to meet and be among so many brilliant and inspiring women together in one place, all with common goal of caring and helping others, especially in this spectacular setting. I felt very privileged.
