National Careers Week 11 - 17 May 2026

national careers week 2026

National Careers Week celebrates different jobs, career paths and opportunities.

It’s a great time to start simple conversations with your child about what they enjoy and what they might like to do in the future.

Talking about jobs at home can help your child imagine what’s possible. These conversations can help your child:

  • learn about the many types of work that exist
  • see how learning at school connects to real life
  • feel curious and dream big for the future

Small conversations make a big difference

You don’t need to know about careers, training or pathways to help your child. Simple chats show your child that you care about their ideas and believe in them.

Career conversations can happen anywhere, including:

  • while watching TV and talking about the jobs you see
  • noticing people at work in your community
  • talking about what family members do

Easy ways to get started

We’ve created simple resources to help you begin, based on your child’s age.

If your child is in high school, Exploring Careers can help you look at different jobs and options together.
national reconciliation week 2026

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for us to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements.

This year’s theme, All In, asks all Australians to commit to reconciliation every single day. It reminds us that reconciliation is everyone’s responsibility and that change happens when people take action together — not just during this week, but all year round.

Your child or children may take part in NRW activities at school. Here are some ways you can get involved at home:

  • Listen and learn: Attend a local NRW community event, or listen to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices through talks or online resources.
  • Talk together: Watch a family‑friendly program about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, then talk with your child about what you learned together. ABC iView has free programs available.
  • Create and reflect: Complete the NRW colouring‑in sheet or look at Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artworks together. Ask your child what they notice or how the artwork makes them feel.
  • Use translated resources: Learn about reconciliation and this year’s theme, All In, in your preferred language by exploring the translated NRW resources

At The Smith Family, we stand with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples on the journey to reconciliation. You can learn more about our commitment to reconciliation on the Information Hub
