Dandenong High School students will ride strong for kids in need

On Sunday 8 October 2017, the Port Phillip Bay coastline in Victoria will become a sea of cyclists. It’s all in support of disadvantaged children. This year we’re thrilled to celebrate 25 years of Melbourne’s biggest bike ride, Around the Bay, with over 100,000 riders participating each year. And this year, students from Dandenong High School have set their sights high.

“We want to break the record that was set by last year’s Dandenong High Riders, which was $2,500. This time we are aiming for $3000,” said 15-year-old Aparna.

“I think it’s a great idea to raise money for The Smith Family because it helps the children who are struggling to afford their education and school supplies.”

Riders can choose from nine routes that range between 25km and 250km. Aparna has set her sights on 50km. Going into their fifth year at Around the Bay, the school is planning their biggest team yet – 25 students. With bikes donated by RACV (Royal Automobile Club of Victoria), they’re all set for success.

But on the day, it’s determination that will get the students over the finish line. Last year, students faced severe weather conditions.

“It took us one and a half hours to ride 25 kilometres down to Mentone, and nearly six hours back with the very, very strong headwind,” said teacher, Jenna.

“We thought about pulling the plug but our students were begging to continue. They said, ‘We just want to get it done.’ It was the best feeling for them to go over the finish line and hear the team called out [over the loudspeaker].

“The motivation the team had on the day was outstanding.”
