Learning Clubs 2022
What are Learning Clubs?
Learning Clubs provide a safe and supportive out-of-school learning environment where primary or secondary students can participate in activities that develop their academic and social skills. Types of clubs include homework, literacy, numeracy or multi-focus.
Our Clubs and volunteer tutors provide critical, direct support for the educational and social development of disadvantaged young Australians to succeed at school, so they can create better futures for themselves.
We will be in touch with you in 2022 regarding The Smith Family's COVID-19 safe guidelines for our learning clubs.
Key skills and qualities of volunteers include:
- Excellent interpersonal skills with a strong ability to communicate well with people
- A Friendly and positive attitude
- Would like to enhance your tutoring and relationship skills
- Sound knowledge of primary and/or secondary subject areas
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
Responsibilities of a Learning Club Tutor:
The volunteer Learning Club Tutor role offers the opportunity for you to use and enhance your tutoring and relationship skills, alongside other passionate team members! Key responsibilities of this role include:
- Assist students to complete homework tasks
- Assist students in developing skills and knowledge in particular subject areas through structured activities
- Model and encourage appropriate behavioural standards and build positive relationships with students
- Set up and pack (tables/chairs/resources/fruit etc)
- Liaise with the Club Coordinator on students' support needs and progress
Numeracy Learning Club tutors also have a responsibility to support students to improve their maths and general numeracy skills by using a range of supplied numeracy-based activities (i.e. the mathematics syllabus and curriculum content at the appropriate level)
Literacy Learning Club tutors also have a responsibility to support students to improve their reading and general literacy skills by using a range of supplied literacy-based activities
What is the time commitment?
Generally, we are seeking a volunteer commitment of 1-2 hours (once per week) for a minimum of two school terms. Clubs typically run just after school finishes.
