Rebecca’s story

Through volunteering, Rebecca is helping disadvantaged students create a better future

“The Smith Family provides a fantastic environment for a volunteer; you will grow your skill set and grow as a person. It feels awesome to be part of an organisation that cares for others and cares for their staff. Giving back to the community in this way makes you feel really good!”

Rebecca is one of more than 8,500 volunteers throughout Australia who, like you, generously donate their time to helping The Smith Family support disadvantaged students with their education.

One of our wonderful volunteers, Rebecca.

For four years Rebecca has been part of the Volunteer Operations Centre, assisting with the administration duties that underpin the Learning for Life program.

She joined to gain work experience while completing a Certificate 4 in Community Services Work. Despite a busy schedule with two young children, study, work and another volunteer role, Rebecca is passionate about making a difference in the lives of other Australians and makes time to continue volunteering with us.

“My role helps to free up the Learning for Life Coordinators so they can assist families better, rather than being bogged down with administration tasks like checking documents and reports, checking attendance and finding out if documents have been sent in or not,” she says.

“I have also tried my hand at mentoring, leadership and talking directly to families. I’ve stepped outside my comfort zone to grow many of my skills. This helped me complete my TAFE studies and go on to study at university."

“Working within an organisation that is changing lives is an incredible experience and being part of it is huge for me.”

says Kay.

This National Volunteer Week, we thank you for being a volunteer with The Smith Family.

We value your special donation of time. Without dedicated people like you, we wouldn’t be able to help disadvantaged students and their families throughout Australia.
